Knit your own mittens with this easy-to-follow pattern!
My Nanny (grandmother) has knit our family many treasured pairs of mittens over the years. I have made my own adapted pattern looking at her original work and adjusting for the needles and wool I have available.
This is a classic style of knitted mitten used in Newfoundland and many Scandinavian and Nordic regions.
While they are often referred to as “double knit” mittens, they are not double knit in the true sense of the term – but the design of using two colours throughout creates a thicker mitt that feels doubled up.
This pattern uses an Aran weight of yarn but with 4mm needles (Aran often recommends 4.5mm to 6mm).
I also double-up on wool on my sleeve so that they are extra thick.
This pattern is a one size adult size but there are notes below on how to adjust for smaller or larger hands.
Knitting mittens may be a bit tricky for beginners as they require knitting in the round and with two colours – but, I’ve included detailed instructions, including images and videos, as much as possible to help.
This mittens pattern comes with six total grids:
Triangle mittens (pictured below)
Diamond mittens
Snowflake mittens (top middle)
Heart mittens
Lobster mittens (top left)
